MS Word Tips

Note that these techniques may differ depending on the version of Word you are using. Microsoft loves to rearrange their interface every version or two. If you are unable to figure out how to make something work in your version of Word, simply google the feature along with the version you are using.

  • Open up Word and type out a placeholder phrase if one isn’t already there.
  • Make sure it has the formatting your dropdown text will eventually require.
  • Highlight your text and then open the Developer tab. Under the Controls group, select the Drop-Down List Content Control.
  • Your text will now become part of a dropdown menu but it will keep the formatting you applied.
  • Click on the dropdown and (still under the Controls group) select Properties.
  • Click “Add” to add an entry. Repeat as necessary.
  • The rest of the controls in the Content Control Properties are fairly straightforward. Modify lets you edit an entry, Remove removes the highlighted entry, Move Up/Move Down move the highlighted entry up or down in the list.

Refer to the Using Quick Parts in Outlook article for more information on this.
